WHAT’S IN A SONG? Luke 1:67-80 Will Zechariah make room for God? “His father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit…” (vs. 67) This one verse makes it clear that Zechariah made room for God. Actually, Zechariah himself didn’t make room for God. He didn’t have the attitude like, “I’m Zechariah. I will clear out myself, most of it anyway; just enough to squeeze some Holy Spirit in there.” No, he came to the end of himself and was willing to give himself over to God—and God made room in Zechariah for the Holy Spirit, with Whom Zechariah was then filled. He continues on in the next verses of his song in selfless praise to the one true God. He thanks God for keeping His word, also. What God says, He means. “He has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of His servant David, (as he has said through His holy prophets of long ago.)” (vss. 69-70) God promised a redeemer who was coming soon. Zechariah also proclaims that he will be enabled by God to serve Him without fear in holiness and righteousness before Him all of our days. ‘All of your days’ is a long time to give to God. It’s your whole life. We have to ask ourselves if we are willing to serve Him for all of our days, hours, minutes and even seconds! Zechariah was willing to do so. He wanted to be devoted to God one-hundred percent. He also wanted this same devotion to God to be in his son, John. In fact, he knew that John would lead a holy and righteous life. He knew his son would be one to “go on before the Lord to prepare the way for Him, to give His people the knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of sins…” (vs. 76-77) John the Baptist would be one to lead, teach, and guide people to Jesus, the Son of God, one whom they knew was coming soon. Don’t we also know that He is coming soon? “What kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming.” (2 Peter 3:11-12) We, like Zechariah, need to have a song of testimony of giving our lives to God. Then, God will make us clean, make room for Himself, and He will fill us. He is coming soon—Be full of Him! ~ Jillian Krauser, age 18
